This year (1988) falls on the 200th anniversary of the birth of Schopenhauer. The researches into Schopenhauer have so far cherished his conventional image, which was developed under the unique cultural background in Western Europe in the late 19 century, without any criticism, and so we hardly expect the development of new perspectives for clarifying the historical and contemporary meanings of Schopenhauer’s philosophy. This is true also in the historical study of Japan’s acceptance of Schopenhauer’s philosophy in parallel with the adaptation to western culture since the Meiji era. Japan Schopenhauer Society was established, with the purpose of overcoming the above situation and promoting new understandings and researches regarding Schopenhauer and related philosophies and cultures. This establishment can be said to be one of the response to recent trends of seeking new potential of Schopenhauer researches based on the previous studies on Schopenhauer inside and outside Japan. Japan Schopenhauer Society aims to broadly promote the researches into Schopenhauer and related studies, including the historical study of Japan’s acceptance of Schopenhauer’s philosophy and comparative studies of literature and philosophy, from various viewpoints, such as philosophy, literature, and fine arts. Based on such comprehension, this open society hopes to achieve its purpose by enlisting participation and cooperation from many people, not only narrowly-defined researchers, but in a multidisciplinary manner.
